Oregon & California Coast, Highway 101- Yachats to Fortuna

2 months, 1252 miles, 19 campgrounds and 100’s of memories 😉

On this trip down the coast we tried to stay at as many State Parks and Beaches as possible. We began our trip down the coast on Hwy 101 in Yachats, OR., we love this area and have been here several times.  We stayed at Tillicum Beach Campground, site #17, it’s an awesome campground to stay at, very clean and their facilities are well maintained, many sites are right on the beach.

We visited Spouting Horn and Thors Well when the tide was coming in.  It’s such a beautiful and mesmerizing location, I could spend hours just watching the waves roll in and crash on the shore.  I would love to see this place on a stormy day it must be spectacular.

The drive along this stretch of Hwy 101 is beautiful, there are so many locations to stop and take in the scenic coastline, we also stopped at Neptune State Beach.( we did another post on this area, check out “Destination Yah-hots“)

Neptune State Beach

We had to stop in at Yachats Brewing and Farmstore, they have great food and drinks.  Their menu is seasonal and they pride themselves on using local and organic ingredients, their staff is friendly and efficient too.

From Yachats we headed south to Bastendorff County Campground.  The campsite we reserved was under 2-3″ of water as were many of the sites.  The campground was empty so the host told us we could drive around and look for a more desirable, dry site.  I don’t think we would return to this place but it was a great location for enjoying the area.

We did another post on this area ( “Bullard’s Beach @ Bandon”)

There were even volunteer naturalists at one of the viewpoints with telescopes, binoculars and information about the wildlife in the area.

The dogs enjoyed Bastendorff’s dog friendly beach and we even had a visitor at our campsite!

We drove down the Samuel Boardman State Scenic Corridor, this drive is right along the coast and is one of the most beautiful drives I have ever experienced.

There are lots of trails, viewpoints and hikes along this scenic corridor.

These pictures don’t convey the beauty of the area, you have to go and experience it!

Our last stop along the Oregon coast of Hwy 101 was in Brookings, OR.  We stayed at Harris Beach State Park, it’s located in a very convenient location, near to town and very close to lots of outdoor activities.  This campground was going thru renovations when we visited in 2018 but it was a beautiful place to camp (we recommend you get a sight away from the hwy).  The campsites are clean and paved and the facilities and park are very well maintained.  There are nice trails from the campground down to the beach.  Harris Beach is wonderful, I think we walked on the beach everyday we were there.

Every day on the beach is a brand new experience…..

beautiful, renewing, inspiring, relaxing, cleansing.

We really enjoyed staying at Harris Beach State Park and campground.

From Brookings we drove south into California.

We have done another post on this stretch of Hwy 101 from Crescent City to Fortuna (check out “North Coast Redwoods”).

Trinidad, CA

We wanted to include our stay at the Riverwalk RV park in Fortuna, CA.  It was a nice, well maintained park with clean facilities.
