Las Cruces, New Mexico

New Mexico

We stayed a few days in Las Cruces, we didn’t know what to expect but were pleasantly surprised.  The weather was cool, dry, sunny and temperatures were in the low 30’s to low 70’s.  We stayed at Hacienda RV & Rally Resort.

We visited the White Sands National National Monument, considered one of the worlds great wonders, it is the worlds largest gypsum dunes engulfing 275 sq. miles.  The story about how it was created and the geology of the area is fascinating.  It literally felt cool to walk around barefoot on the sand.

The White Sands Missile Range is on the way to White Sands National Monument.  It is the largest military installation in the United States.  It encompasses 3,200 sq. miles and is the site of the first atomic bomb test, codename Trinity.  The entire 3,200 sq. miles is restricted airspace.  We had to go thru a strict security clearance and automobiles are searched!

Our last stop exploring Las Cruces was the Space Murals Museum, a tiny museum off of Hwy. 70, with LOTS of really cool displays and memorabilia.  They even had a huge model of the International Space Station!

We also stopped in Bosque Brewing Company , they have excellent, innovative beers.  We passed thru El Paso and could see the town of Ciudad Juarez, Mexico.  The Pope will be visiting the city in February.

PS:  The photo of the road runner at the top of the page is a giant sculpture made out of  materials from the landfill and a metal recycling center.
